88DB.com MEGA Revamp

Written by ShopOne on March 24th, 2010 in Linked News.

With hopes of becoming the country’s one-stop shop for shopping, search, and networking activities, 88DB.com, erstwhile a local classifieds site, has recently implemented a major overhaul of its portal by integrating 28 new categories that users can browse through.

Travel, Business Services, Beauty and Wellness, Pets, and Weddings are just among the categories that the new site will carry. “All of us are always seeking to connect,” said Racquel Cagurangan, general manager of 88DB Philippines, “whether through someone who can give us information we need, a product that can help us, or a service that can make our lives better. We are also looking for people who may need our services or products that we in turn offer. It is this dynamic continuous interaction that makes 88DB different – while other sites do have categories, ours build on that to become engaging communities.”

25 years since the first domain name, Symbolics.com

Written by ShopOne on March 10th, 2010 in Linked News.

1985 – Symbolics.com is registered, with Bbn.com and Think.com making up the first three dotcoms.

1986 – Xerox snapped up theirs in January, following by IBM in March and Boeing in September. At this stage, the concept of using the internet for commercial purposes was still unheard of.

1987 – Apple, just as it was launching its groundbreaking SE computer, registered Apple.com in February – again, without much of a clue of its future potential. The 100th dotcom to be registered, Nynexst.com, is added to the list on 30 November.

1988 – Robert Morris, a student at Cornell University writes the first notable computer “worm”, supposedly to gauge the size of the internet at that time (some 60,000 computers, as it turned out). He’s convicted under the 1986 Computer Fraud and Abuse Act; today he’s an associate professor at MIT.

1989 – The World becomes the first company to offer dial-up internet access to the American public. In March, Compuserve – an alternative dialup service – makes its first links to the internet, allowing the receipt and transmission of email messages. Still no web, though

1990 – The first search engine, Archie, is written by Alan Emtage, a computer science student at the university of Montreal, enabling users to locate material on public computers. On Christmas Day Tim Berners-Lee compiles the first webpage at the unmemorable URL nxoc01.cern.ch.

Multiply Marketplace

Written by ShopOne on January 14th, 2010 in Linked News.

From Peter Pezaris -  Multiply Founder & CEO

Multiply Marketplace – We now have a centralized place to browse through the thousands of virtual stores being operated by your fellow Filipinos here on Multiply. Look for the “Shop” link now in the top part of our site to see the different categories of products being offered by Multiply’s community of online sellers. We created this directory as an effective way for sellers to promote their shops and connect with the people who actually want to buy, while keeping it all separate from those who don’t. If you’d like to add your own shop to the directory, look for the link located beneath the Marketplace.

Google offers free 200 websites in the Philippines

Written by ShopOne on November 4th, 2009 in Online Promos.

Google on Tuesday offered to build for free websites for 200 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) as well as give P2,000 worth of free credits on Google AdWords.Derek Callow, head of marketing for Google Southeast Asia, said the one-time offer is meant to boost the online presence of local firms and help them harness the power of the Web to grow their business. He said the first 200 businesses who sign up at www.google.com.ph/stimulus between now and December 15, 2009 will have their company websites developed by STI College for free.

“Any Philippine company that has a product to sell and a valid business permit can apply for the package,” he said in a presentation in Makati City.

He added that subsequent participants need only pay a one-time fee of P3,000 to STI College for the website development work. Since the websites are hosted on Blogger.com, which is owned by Google, there would be no hosting fees charged to the business.

Multiply Supports Online Selling & Online Sellers

Written by ShopOne on October 22nd, 2009 in News & Reports.

Until now, running a shop on Multiply has technically been a violation of our terms of service. As long as you didn’t spam anyone though, we simply looked the other way and let you go about your business. I know that this policy didn’t exactly give you all a lot of comfort, so I’m happy to announce that we’ve updated our terms of service to reflect the fact that running a shop on Multiply is now an officially endorsed activity.

If you would like to run a shop on Multiply, all you have to do is identify yourself as an online seller. To do this, click on “my account” at the top of any page and then on “My Account Info”. In the Account Type field just check the box to indicate that your account is an online shop. That’s it! Once you make this change, you’ll see “Online Seller” appear below your headshot on your site (or “Premium Seller” if you have a Premium account).

Please help us spread the word on this. You will need to check this box in order to continue to run your shop on Multiply, but we understand that it will take time for everyone to get the message.

Also, please continue to be mindful of our spam policy. Sending unsolicited personal messages, or posting to groups, for the purpose of promoting your shop is considered spam and could result in the cancellation of your account.

Being officially supported and having the ability to identify yourself as an online seller is a great first step, but we have more to come. In the near future we’ll start adding features designed explicitly for you to help you better run your business on Multiply. The reason for this group is to allow you to help guide us in those efforts.

For now, thanks for your continued support of Multiply and I’ll be back in touch soon with many, many questions. :-)
