Negative Feedback is well, Negative

Written by Becypher on August 26th, 2008 in eBay, Selling.

I have my account over at eBay.ph and as I try to study and understand how the online auction works, I was able to sell, and then some. I have accumulated over 100 positive feedbacks. Many thanks to those poeple who got my new, and some used items.

I really get joy out of selling stuff online.

But what comes with the positives are the negatives. Literally.

Negative feedbacks over at eBay could really set you few steps backs on your buying and selling. For those rookie eBay users, negative feedback could change the way sellers look at you in case you bid on their items. For eBay noobs, early negative feedback almost seals the deal. It would be hard for one seller/buyer to proceed if they have a net negative account. Some sellers would note this as those, “may utang pa!”

For those mid range accounts (that has say 100 feedbacks) that have no negative feedback, a negative feedback received affects a seller momentum and the chase for eBay excellence.

And, for POWER SELLERS, negative feedback is costly. As being power sellers, eBay requires a seller to be of good percentage standing over a period of one year. Two to three negative feedbacks and eBay can stripped you of your power seller status.

Not being biased and putting my thoughts because I am more of a seller but really, a good performance of over 100 good closed transactions could be erased by say, 2 so-so eBayers, i.e., newbies and/or irresponsible dudes. And with the eBay change of not giving sellers the power to counter post a negative feedback, that really promotes irresponsible, noobs, mis-informed, uneducated eBayers to go on negative feedback posting spree.

I’ll test contact an eBay rep for me to understand this seller-buyer (un)fair play. If ever eBay shoots back an answer, I will post follow up entry. If not, well, that just its, eBay Feedback System is… Negative.

Email sent to eBay…

Hello there,

I received one negative feedback recently. It may or may not be deserved but as I follow eBay Philippines system and operation and blog about it, I just want to know eBay’s position on cases like these.

For the related info, pls check the dispute console. have already stated my answer there but for clarity let me just send it anyways.

1. Buyer pays for the item and I shipped it.
2. Item received.
3. No emails, no sms, no phone message received after it was delivered. You could also check eBay contact form sent, we did not receive any.
4. After some days, the buyer files a dispute with reasoning item not as described and said he/she’s been contacting us and we did not reply. By the way, the item is only 3$ no reason whatsoever to not answer call/email/sms.
5. I received no mail, sms, calls from the buyer.
6. Item is as described. Buyer equates “SIGNIFICANTLY NOT AS DESCRIBED” to that of a “DEFECTIVE ITEM.” Which is not same.
7. My item is as described and may have been defective. Also, it being defective is still up for confirmation. If ever it is defective, that’s where our warranty kicks in. A simple mail to us and we can easily replace an item in an instant. The buyer as stated, on his own, tried to operate it on his own and did not give us a chance to help out.

I just want to know your stand on these type of cases. Me getting a negative feedback instantaneously for a purchase that we guaranteed will be taken cared of in terms of shipping duration and item functionality. Basically we are not given a chance to correct a sale (if ever it is defective). Buyer knowing that that they will not receive an explanatory negative feedback just goes on and posted a negative feedback.

This put us at a disadvantage as we really do care about giving the best that we can do to our buyer. For our understanding I hope you would be able to comment on this.

Sincerely,
